I stayed up till 2AM talking to András from the BeboP Hostel last night. We killed a bottle of Hungarian red wine (and a couple of beers after the wine ran out) while talking about Hungary, politics and popular culture. His favorite TV show from the US right now? “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”. It happens to be one of my favorites too. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a sitcom on FX that I find hilarious, but humor is subjective and that humor is definitely not for everyone. To say it’s dark would be an understatement. More like pitch black. It surprised me at the time that András was even aware of the show, much less that he loved it, but why not? It’s not like they don’t have the Internet here. Out in the countryside, it is still a bit scarce, but broadband is readily available in urban areas. And although Hungary is a democracy, it is a very young one and it is dealing with a host of problems, many tracing back to its occupation by the Soviets. Under those circumstances, dark humor just goes with the territory. So cheers and thank you, András! I was hoping for precisely these kinds of experiences when I started this little adventure. I just never in a million years would have imagined that “Sunny” would be a part of them.
